BUCHAREST, Romania \u2014<\/strong>\u00a0Romania scrambled two F-16 fighter jets after a small maritime drone was discovered drifting near the strategically important Neptun Deep offshore gas project in the Black Sea, prompting a rapid military and explosive-ordnance response.<\/p>\n

The drone was reported by a commercial vessel at approximately 6:28 a.m. local time on Aug. 20 after being spotted several hundred meters from the Neptun Alpha platform, about 80 nautical miles east of Constan\u021ba within Romania\u2019s exclusive economic zone, according to Romania\u2019s Ministry of National Defence.<\/p>\n

Given the drone\u2019s proximity to critical offshore infrastructure, Romanian authorities immediately dispatched two Air Force F-16s to investigate and secure the area.<\/p>\n

One of the fighter jets engaged the unmanned vessel with its onboard cannon, striking the target but failing to destroy it completely. A Romanian Coast Guard vessel carrying an explosive-ordnance disposal team from the Naval Forces was then sent to the scene to inspect the damaged craft.<\/p>\n

Explosive Charge Discovered<\/h3>\n

Romania\u2019s Defense Ministry later confirmed that the maritime drone was carrying an explosive charge.<\/p>\n

Officials said analysis of tracking data from the F-16 aircraft, combined with information collected by the crew of the responding vessel, confirmed that the incident involved a single drone. Romanian EOD personnel subsequently neutralized the device safely.<\/p>\n

The discovery of an explosive payload raised immediate concerns because of the drone\u2019s proximity to offshore energy infrastructure and personnel operating at the Neptun Alpha platform.<\/p>\n

Romanian authorities have not publicly established who launched the maritime drone or where it originated.<\/p>\n

Origin Remains Unclear<\/h3>\n

The incident comes amid continuing security concerns in the Black Sea linked to Russia\u2019s war against Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Romanian Defense Minister Radu Miru\u021b\u0103 said authorities contacted Ukraine through a direct communication channel and received confirmation that the drone did not belong to Ukrainian forces. Reuters reported that Romania had not publicly established the drone\u2019s origin.<\/p>\n

Romanian President Nicu\u0219or Dan blamed Russia for what he described as irresponsible incidents and said Romania would remain vigilant in cooperation with its NATO allies. Russia had not publicly accepted responsibility for the maritime drone.<\/p>\n

The episode followed another series of discoveries near the same offshore energy project.<\/p>\n

Earlier in August, Romanian naval EOD divers destroyed two Gerbera-type unmanned aerial systems found drifting near the Neptun Deep perimeter. Ukraine again confirmed that the systems were not Ukrainian.<\/p>\n

Neptun Deep Has Strategic Importance<\/h3>\n

The repeated incidents have highlighted concerns about the vulnerability of offshore energy infrastructure in the Black Sea.<\/p>\n

Neptun Deep, jointly developed by OMV Petrom and Romgaz, is expected to begin natural-gas production in 2027. The project is projected to significantly increase Romania\u2019s domestic gas production and strengthen the country\u2019s role in Europe\u2019s energy market.<\/p>\n

Romania\u2019s position on NATO\u2019s southeastern flank, combined with its proximity to the war in Ukraine, has exposed the country to a growing range of maritime and aerial security challenges.<\/p>\n

The latest incident demonstrates the difficulties faced by authorities attempting to protect critical infrastructure in an increasingly contested Black Sea environment. Rapid detection, fighter-jet interception and specialized EOD capabilities allowed Romanian forces to neutralize the immediate threat without reported casualties or damage to the offshore platform.<\/p>\n

Romanian authorities continue to monitor the surrounding waters and coordinate with military and NATO partners as efforts continue to protect energy facilities, commercial shipping and personnel operating in the region.<\/p>\n
