The rift in relations between the US and South Korea surfaced after President Donald Trump recently directed the Pentagon to scale back joint military training with Seoul.<\/p>\n

WASHINGTON, DC:<\/strong> President Donald Trump took aim at South Korea after the country declined to help the US in the war with Iran, questioning why Washington should spend billions of dollars to protect Seoul.<\/p>\n

The growing rift between the US and South Korea emerged after Trump directed the Pentagon to scale back joint military training with Seoul.<\/p>\n

Trump cited his good relationship with North Korea and South Korea\u2019s refusal to assist the United States in the war against Iran.<\/p>\n

Trump says he won’t be \u201cstupid\u201d and keep helping<\/strong><\/p>\n

During a sit-down interview with Fox News host Trey Gowdy on Sunday, August 30, President Trump questioned why the United States should \u201cspend billions and billions of dollars helping\u201d other countries, singling out South Korea.<\/p>\n

During the interview, he also touted US operations against Iran and in the Strait of Hormuz while complaining that American allies had offered little assistance.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe got very little help from other countries,\u201d Trump said. \u201cAnd we help other countries; we spend billions and billions of dollars helping NATO and other countries.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump said the United States had personally asked South Korea to participate in the conflict, but Seoul declined.<\/p>\n

\u201cSouth Korea, as an example. We helped them, but when it came to helping us, I didn\u2019t put on a heavy sell, but I just said, \u2018Would you like to participate?\u2019 and they all said, \u2018No, thank you.\u2019 And I said, \u2018I\u2019m going to remember that to myself.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo you could say we are going to make a lot of money, because when they\u2019re not willing to go for you, you just can\u2019t be a stupid person and help them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Trump ordered Pentagon to scale back military exercises<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nearly two weeks ago, President Trump directed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to \u201csubstantially reduce\u201d planned joint military exercises with South Korea.<\/p>\n

At the time, Trump specifically cited Seoul\u2019s refusal to join the United States in the conflict with Iran and pointed to his friendship with South Korea\u2019s rival, North Korea, in a post on Truth Social.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Gowdy, Trump again emphasized the scale of America\u2019s military commitment to Seoul.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey want our help. We have thousands and thousands \u2014 like, in South Korea, as an example, we have 40,000 soldiers over there. And I said, \u2018Would you mind giving us a little hand with Iran, the Islamic Republic of Iran?\u2019 And they say, \u2018Well, we\u2019d rather not.\u2019 And I said, \u2018OK, thank you very much.
